Where to begin pursuit of mortgage modification scammers?
|
11/28/2011 5:36 AM (PST)
The Hardship Center offered to help us (me and my husband) get a modification of our mortgage loan. We paid them $2,500 and we signed a contract. Now, emails are returned as undeliverable, phone calls are not returned and the web site has disappeared. Our modification application was denied on November 23, 2011.
I live in Florida. The listed address for the Hardship Center is in California. The web site IP address originates in Texas. I would like to pursue this matter, but I do not know where to begin. This person or persons should be held accountable for taking our money and NOT DELIVERING THE CONTRACTED SERVICE! I'd like to get my money back, too.

What if you paid them by check. Can you still get the money back?

Contact the California State Attorney General. They have an 800 number for consumer complaints and also have a bureau that handles complaints like yours. You may also want to check the Better Business Bureau for more information on the scammers. The BBB will often have the names of owners, managers, etc. Those are worth giving to the State Attorney General when you file a complaint. If an attorney is involved contact the California Bar Association and file a complaint with them. It's short and easy to do. I work exclusively with people who have been scammed and California is a hot spot for these scams. Especially in LA County. Depending on how long ago you paid, you might get some help from your bank. Ask. Good luck!!
